    2017-2018 Discipline Plan


    The desired outcomes of effective implementation of this plan are:

    • Reductions of expulsion, arrests, suspensions (OSS & ISI), referrals to special education for behavior/disciplinary reasons, alternative school placement referrals, office referrals, truancy, tardiness, and classroom disruptions.
    • Improved safety through active supervision.
    • More welcoming school climates.
    • Improved average daily attendance of students and staff.
    • Empowered staff – reduced staff turnover.
    • Improved “school connectedness,” resulting in increased motivation, resulting in improved academic outcomes.
    • Increased academic achievement.



    Referral Process

    • Any class one or major offense will be referred to the principal’s office for further action – i.e. aggressive behavior, obscene language, open defiance -Handled by teacher- gum chewing, talking, not bringing materials, failure to complete work
    • What are some examples of frequent minor and major infractions for your building for them to refer to?
    • Minor infractions include; excessive talking, gum chewing, not bringing materials to class, tardiness, failure to complete work -
    • The following procedures will be used by teachers for classroom management for minor offenses:
    • Verbal Warning to the student specifying what action is inappropriate
    • Redirect student to appropriate actions
    • If the inappropriate behavior continues the teacher will document a phone call to the parent, if unsuccessful a note will be sent to the parent
    • If misbehavior continues teacher may assign break detention, silent lunch, teacher may refer the student to the office for administrative support
    • Discipline procedures
      • The following options are used by the administrative staff to help the students avoid further disciplinary actions such as OSS, ISI, ASD, Alternative Placement, or Expulsion. The administrative team uses peer modeling, change a student’s schedule, change seating arrangements, behavioral contracts, PST intervention, Administrative phone calls and administrative meetings with parents, teacher parent meetings, refer to counselor
      • Parents are contacted by the teacher when a discipline problem continues after verbal warning and redirection and each time a student has ISI or ASD
      • A student is referred to PST if he or she demonstrates a pattern of inappropriate behaviors in one or more classrooms
      • Upon referral to PST a behavioral plan will be created and implemented
      • An IEP meeting or 504 meeting will be requested when the student’s behavior plan has been ineffective and that these manifestations are not the result of their identified disability.


     Classroom Management Plan


    • All classrooms have the school’s management plan posted. These plans were developed through the school-wide discipline plan



    Hallway and Common Area Procedures


    • In all hallways and common areas of NMS, the students are expected and required to walk in a mannerly and orderly fashion. All instructors are required to supervise student transitions during the school day. School personnel are assigned supervisory duties before and after school to ensure the safety of the students in the hallway, common area, drop-off and pick-up zones. Instructors are also required to escort their classes to the lunchroom and bus area at the appropriate times.



    Cafeteria Procedures


    • Students are escorted to and from the cafeteria by their classroom teachers. Students have assigned seats and are supervised by the administrative team and selected staff. Students are expected to act with appropriate manners and behaviors during their lunch period.


    Assembly Procedures


    • During assembly, teachers escort their students to/from the assembly area and remain with them. Students sit by grade level and are dismissed by grade level at the end of each program. Students are expected to act with appropriate behavior and respect for the participants in the assembly.


    PST Behavior Recommendations


    A student is recommended for PST for behavior usually by the principal or assistant principal. Referrals are usually based on several factors such as: the number of times a student was seen in the office, number of times a student has been placed in 151, or the significance of an occurrence. Based on the severity of the behavior, the team might recommend some behavior modifications through the classroom teacher. The student could be given a daily monitoring sheet for certain behaviors and earn rewards if he/she does not exhibit any of those negative behaviors during the day. If this works the plan could be modified to only include the behaviors the student was still exhibiting in the classroom. If the team feels that PST should do a behavior study to see how often certain behaviors are occurring, the chair would set up a lO-day study based on recommendations from the team. After all the data has been collected, the information will be input into the computer and a Functional Behavior Assessment report can be printed. The team will meet again to discuss the report and work on a formal intervention
    plan. Character Education Program


    The purpose of the Character Education program is to integrate good character traits into the total school environment, as well as into the community. These words and definitions focus on the attitudes and personal qualities that build a foundation for success in life and work. These character traits are imbedded throughout the curriculum and are a daily focus of both students and school staff members.

    Northside Middle School will be utilizing the Film Clips character education program throughout Social Studies classes on a weekly basis.  Film Clips is a streaming service that utilizes popular movies to teach character traits in a fun and meaningful format. 

     NMS motto: The 3 B’s:  Be respectful, Be resourceful and  Be responsible

    It is the intention of Northside middle school  is to implement a school-embed character plan designed to give teachers the tools and strategies they need to help shape character by creating a positive, empowering culture and environment in which children are learning and growing.  NMS will be utilizing the Film Clips character program for the 2017-2018 school year.  Social Studies teachers will receive an access code to video clips with all the lessons that can be easily implemented into a 10 minute warmup lesson on Monday’s.  A schedule with monthly themes and weekly lessons will be given to all faculty members to embed the trait cross-curricular.  Morning announcements will include a daily character quote and character word of the week.  Teachers will develop character trait word walls and English classes will incorporate the character word of the week into vocabulary lessons. School wide character interventions will include daily announcements/quotes, and bulletin boards as well as reference to the character trait within classroom lessons by all teachers…

    Each month the faculty will have a focus Character trait with lessons designed to address 4 subtopics that relate to the focus trait. Focus traits are developed based on school based needs and discipline issues.  


    Positive Reinforcement


    Northside Middle School is dedicated to being a place of mutual respect. It is an expectation that students will follow directions whether given by administrators, teachers, substitutes, classified staff (including campus supervisors) and any adult employed by the Tuscaloosa County School System.   It is expected that students will conduct themselves in such a fashion that everyone will feel safe and free from harassment, both physical and emotional.

    Northside Middle School has implemented the PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions Support) Program, in our school. The main focus of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is to provide a clear system for all expected behaviors at Northside Middle School. While many faculty and students have assumptions of what is expected behavior, we cannot assume that everyone’s beliefs are similar. Through PBIS, we will work to create and maintain a productive, safe environment in which ALL school community members have clear expectations and understandings of their role in the educational process.

    Our school-wide Positive Incentive Program benefits ALL students who follow our school-wide expectations. PBIS focuses on positive behavior and rewards students with a school wide activity each nine-weeks, in addition to honoring outstanding students of the nine -weeks. Students are taught, and rewarded for following, the expectations in all areas of the school. Students must be problem solvers, act responsibly, work hard, and show respect in and out of the classroom.

    PHS’s Behavioral Plan will apply to students 

    • while on the school grounds
    • while going to or from school
    • during lunch, whether on or off the campus
    • during or while going to or from any school-sponsored activities
    • during any other event related to school activities or attendance


    Respect and courtesy for persons and property is expected at all times. Where a specific penalty for violating a rule is not listed, the consequences assigned will be in proportion to the severity of the infraction.
