From the Office of the Superintendent

At Monday evening's Board of Education meeting, the Board approved the purchase of the Edgenuity online learning solution. CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act federal funding will cover the cost of the purchase.

The purpose of the Edgenuity online learning solution is to improve the quality and efficiency of remote learning offered by the Tuscaloosa County School System. As this school year has gotten underway and TCSS has implemented remote learning, it has become clear that our district needs a more robust platform than what we are currently using. The timeline created by this pandemic, and the need to rush the rollout of a remote learning system, has certainly presented challenges. However, we are learning and adapting our plan as we move forward.

Edgenuity provides a student's instructional content in grades K-12, as well as on-demand tutors for grades 6-12. The content is aligned with state standards, is rigorous, and can be customized to meet students at their individual levels. It is accredited and NCAA-approved. Our TCSS teachers will still maintain contact with their remote students, but teachers will no longer have to create or modify content to push out through Schoology. We believe this will result in a better learning experience for all students, and it will allow teachers to better serve all students.

Our TCSS Department of Curriculum and Instruction will lead the Edgenuity implementation plan for schools, so that there is consistency district-wide. Central Office resources will immediately be directed toward the implementation of Edgenuity, so that we can get this system up and running for our students and teachers, as soon as possible. Students and families will soon receive much more information about the Edgenuity platform.

As this school year has gotten underway, feedback from students, families, and educators has been essential in continuing to refine our Reopening Our Schools plan. I am confident this adjustment to our Reopening Our Schools plan will create a more efficient and productive learning experience for everyone, and allow us to close the learning gap that has been created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Sincerely,

    Keri C. Johnson, Ed.D.
