Join Our Team as a Substitute

  • The Tuscaloosa County School System has opportunities for substitutes in all areas – teaching, custodial, child nutrition, para-educators, and nursing.

Not only is serving as a substitute a great way to support students and your local schools, but it also provides additional benefits. Becoming a substitute gives you a flexible schedule, while still having the ability to earn income. There is high demand for strong substitute teachers! If you are considering a full-time career in education, substituting is a great way to discover if this is right for you, pinpoint what area of education is the best fit for you, and build your professional network. Most importantly, substituting allows you the chance to serve as a role model and have a positive impact on the life of a young person.

Potential substitute candidates should know that TCSS has practices in place to promote a clean and healthy environment in our schools. Key steps involve frequent cleaning and hand washing, social distancing as much as possible in a school setting, wearing masks, visitor restrictions, and closely following Alabama Department of Public Health guidelines for students and faculty/staff who may have been exposed to COVID-19.

Basic requirements to become a substitute include a high school diploma or GED and a background check through the Alabama Department of Education. Applicants who complete the online application requirements will be notified and scheduled for Substitute Orientation. For daily pay rates and other details, visit the Substitute Information and Application page in the Human Resources section of our web site.
