August 9: Letter from the Superintendent

  • August 9, 2021

TCSS Students, Families, Faculty and Staff,

Back-to-school week is here! School begins on Thursday, August 12, for all Tuscaloosa County School System students. In these last few days before school starts, our schools are hard at work preparing to welcome our students to a new year. After a year with some students on campus and some learning remotely, we are glad to have everyone back together in school.

At this time, TCSS continues to move forward as we did last year, operating under the guidance of any current Alabama COVID-19 public health (mask) order. Right now, there is no mask mandate in our state. However, the Alabama Department of Public Health recommends that everyone in schools – students, faculty, and staff, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status – wear masks indoors. TCSS is following this same procedure. We do not require, but we strongly recommend, that everyone wear a mask in our schools. Based on the guidance of the most recent ADPH toolkit for schools, if an individual is wearing a mask, the likelihood of isolation or quarantine is minimized. The toolkit provides information on what circumstances will require an individual to quarantine.

While masks are recommended but not required in our schools, masks are required for anyone riding a school bus. This is based on federal requirements, included in the ADPH toolkit for schools.

TCSS will continue the sanitation practices referenced in our In-Person Learning Plan. We will also continue encouraging personal hygiene practices that promote health.

Medical experts stress that vaccination is our best tool in ending the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccinations are available to anyone age 12 and over. For appointments or more information, visit the DCH System web site

As we know, the COVID-19 situation is always changing. Know that our procedures could change at any point. Please stay close to the ways you receive official information from TCSS. In the event of a change, we would notify our families, faculty, and staff immediately through a phone call.

I am excited to welcome our students back to school. Let’s work together to have a great start to this year!

    Sincerely,

    Keri C. Johnson, Ed.D.

    Superintendent
