Dedication of the James E. Barnett Campus at Northport Intermediate School

  • Congratulations to Mr. James Barnett on the dedication of the James E. Barnett Campus at Northport Intermediate School! Mr. Barnett served our school system for nearly 30 years as a Board of Education member. He retired from service on the Board last year.

Northport Intermediate School recently made a request to the Board that the campus be named in Mr. Barnett’s honor, and the Board approved that request.

Friends, family, and educators gathered at Northport Intermediate on Sunday, October 24, to celebrate the naming of the campus.

Mr. Barnett was first elected to the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education in 1978. He served on the Board until 1988, and then served on the Northport City Council from 1992-2000. In 2002, Mr. Barnett was elected to the Board of Education again, and has served as the District Two Board Member until 2020.

In 2002, Mr. Barnett was named Northport Citizen of the Year. In 2005, he was named a member of the All-State School Board. Mr. Barnett has also served on the West Alabama Planning and Development Council and Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority.

Mr. Barnett is a father and grandfather, and has been married to his wife Bebe for 70 years.

Northport Intermediate School opened to students in August. NIS serves students in fifth and sixth grades.
