Cybersecurity Incident Involving PowerSchool
TCSS Families, Faculty, and Staff,
The Alabama Department of Education has notified TCSS of a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, the software provider that provides the student information system for school systems in Alabama. This data breach was an attack on PowerSchool, not on the Alabama Department of Education or our school system.
On December 28, 2024, PowerSchool identified unauthorized access to certain customer information. Information that was accessed may include names, addresses, and email addresses of students, faculty, and staff. Social security numbers were not involved for any students or employees, because that information is not stored in the student information system.
PowerSchool says the incident is contained, and there is no evidence of ongoing unauthorized activity or operational disruptions. PowerSchool has implemented enhanced security measures, deactivated the compromised credentials, and continues to monitor the situation. If we receive further updates from the Alabama State Department of Education on this incident, we will pass that information along to you.
Sincerely,
Office of the Superintendent
Tuscaloosa County School System
