Message for Brookwood Elementary, Middle, and High Families

Brookwood Elementary, Middle, and High Families,

This morning, we received information about concerns of a potential threat to Brookwood High School, based on information that was circulating online among students. As with every situation like this, it is being thoroughly investigated. However, we do not believe there is any active or credible threat to our schools, related to this information circulating online. It appears to be a post completely unrelated to our schools. If you receive this post, please do not repost or share it. Brookwood Middle and Elementary families, we wanted to share this information with you, because of the proximity of your schools to Brookwood High.

Families, please discuss with your students the dangers of re-posting and sharing unverified information online and in messages to friends. If you ever believe there may be a threat to school or student safety, do not repost the information online. Alerting law enforcement or a school administrator immediately is what you should do. This is one of the most important actions anyone can take to keep our schools safe. You may also use our confidential Speak Up for Safety line, if you have a safety concern to share.

Please also see the message below from the Alabama Association of School Resource Officers, which we shared with our entire school system on Friday. It is critically important that you discuss this with your student.

Sincerely,

Keri C. Johnson, Ed.D.

Superintendent

From The Alabama Association of School Resource Officers:

"If you see something on social media concerning school safety, talk to your SRO and Administration if you have concerns. Reposting or spreading unverified information could overshadow a true threat that needs to be investigated.

Many schools are investigating school threats and school hoaxes and almost all have stemmed from unintended, poor choices made by students on social media.

Several arrests have been made all over Alabama this week concerning social media posts. The consequences you and your child may face are based on the impact of their actions, not their intent.

Parents should know what their kids are doing on their devices. Who they are talking to, what they post and what they watch.

Parents should speak to their children about the seriousness of sharing false claims, making threats, and spreading hoaxes on social media. Children need to understand the serious consequences of doing so."
