Dr. Allison Mays, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources

Mays portrait

Dr. Mays is a veteran educator and attorney who serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the Tuscaloosa County School System. Before her promotion to her current position, she served as a high school principal, assistant principal, and teacher – all with the Tuscaloosa County School System. She holds five degrees from The University of Alabama (Roll Tide), including her Ph.D. in educational administration and her juris doctorate. Dr. Mays also teaches graduate-level education administration courses for The University of Alabama as an adjunct faculty member. Dr. Mays is a past president of the Alabama Association of School Personnel Administrators, an affiliate of Alabama’s Council for Leaders of Alabama Schools and serves on the CLAS Board of Directors. In 2019, she received the Excellence in Educational Leadership Award from the University Council for Educational Administration. She is also active in various community organizations.

Before becoming an educator, Dr. Mays practiced law for three years, primarily in the area of school law. While sitting in an IEP meeting as a school board attorney, she realized she liked working with educators more than attorneys, so she returned to The University of Alabama to earn her graduate degree in secondary education. In her current role, Dr. Mays believes that the human resources function of a school system serves to support the adult humans so that they can provide a wonderful educational experience for our students.
