    Bio
Hello! My name is Julie McKinnon. I am very excited to be teaching 5th grade this year! The wonderful experiences that I had at Vance Elementary as a student inspired me to become a teacher. I am from Coaling, Alabama, and after attending Vance, went on to graduate from Brookwood High School in 2004.

I am an alumnus of the University of Alabama, where I earned an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education (2008), and graduate degrees in Gifted and Talented Special Education (MA: 2010 and Ed.S.: 2014). Most recently, I attended Samford University earning a certification in Educational Leadership/Administration in 2015. I am a lifelong learner, and love teaching children to be also.

I believe that elementary school plays an important part in making a learning a positive experience for children. These formative years should be a time for the exploration of knowledge and celebration of learning. Encouraging children on this journey and helping them grow into independent thinkers is my daily goal.

I have a husband and 2 sons. We enjoy camping and exploring, and are currently on a National Park and Landmark kick. Our goal each summer or school break is visit as many as possbile. I love renovation projects, looking at antique shops, and reading a good book.
