• 2016 Starting Strong

Posted by Susan Gossett on 8/25/2016

What a great start to the 2016-2017 school year!  We are so proud of our students at BMS who have been busy getting to know their schedules, their teachers, and each other!  We have already held our Back to School night where parents had the opportunity to meet the teachers and find out about what their students will be learning this year.  We've also had our first football game and volleyball match.  Our teachers have been busy planning amazing opportunties for our students through field trips and we are so excited about some new/returning opportunities.  Thanks to Jones Heating and Plumbing and the support of the TCSS Board of Education, we have been able to secure the funding for our greenhouse and we have four groups of students working on ways to utilize the greenhouse for educational, planting, and eating experiences.  We also have several groups of students who will be working on physical web sites for The University of Alabama and their museums.  Art and Choir are both back to BMS this year and it's incredible to walk down the elective hallway and see and hear all the work these students are doing!

    Let's go Panthers!!

  • Teacher Appreciation

Posted by Susan Gossett on 5/3/2016

It's Teacher Appreciation Week and I for one surely am thankful for the incredible teachers we have here at Brookwood Middle School!  Our teachers go above and beyond on a daily basis to not only teacher their subject matter to students, but to coach students in athletics, to sponsor clubs and organizations in the school, to be here early or stay late to help provide a safe environment for our students, but most of all to encourage students to reach their full potential.

Teachers at Brookwood Middle School are part of a learning community which is focused on student success.  They work together to provide the best learning opportunities for our students.  There's nothing better than walking the halls of Brookwood Middle School and seeing all the student work displayed in the hallways and listening to the students talking about their next assignment or test.  This environment is created by our teachers who focus on student success.

Our teachers are receiving a few tokens of appreciation this week for Teacher Appreciation Week, but there's nothing better than getting thank yous from the students and parents.  If you have a chance, let me encourage you and/or your child to write thank you notes to his or her teachers.

  • Spring is in the Air

Posted by Susan Gossett on 3/30/2016

Spring is in the air and we're excited about all the things going on around the school!  Yesterday we had the opportunity to meet our rising 6th grade students from Brookwood Elementary, Lakeview Elementary, and Vance Elementary.  These students came to Brookwood Middle School and got to see some our current students show off their talents!  Our cheerleaders held a pep rally in the gym, our band played a mini concert in the commons, and our creative expressions group presented an excerpt from their spring production in the cafeteria.  We can't forget our awesome Ambassadors who led the different tour groups around the school and answered questions from the rising sixth graders.  This experience offered a sampling of activities and organizations available here at Brookwood Middle School.

With the spring comes testing.  Our students will be taking the ACT Aspire tests beginning the week of April 18th.  Some basics to help your student perform well on the ACT Aspire test include: make sure your student gets enough sleep each night, make sure your student eats a good breakfast each morning, and make sure your student uses good test taking strategies.  We will hold test taking strategies sessions the week before the ACT Aspire tests begin.

I had always heard that time passes more quickly the older you get, but I can't believe how fast this year has gone by!  We are now in the last 9 weeks of school and this school year will be over before we know it.  We are currently working on planning the Awards Day ceremony and look forward to sharing your students' accomplishments with you in May.

    Happy Spring!!

Students from our 6th and 7th grades visited Vance Elementary and Kid's Zone Discovery to read Dr. Seuss books to young children.  Mrs. Wallace and Mrs. Lagunes chaperoned the students and everyone enjoyed getting to spend time with the little ones that will eventually become students here at Brookwood!

  • Literacy Matters

Posted by Susan Gossett on 2/25/2016

As a former English teacher, it always excites me to see students excited about reading and let me tell you, our 8th grade students are excited about literacy right now!  They have held a book drive to benefit Tuscaloosa's One Place Baby Talk.  They have also worked on their attendance and their positive behaviors and their grades so they can go back to their elementary schools and share the excitement about reading with younger students.  They have created lessons that they will share with the elementary students at Brookwood Elementary, Lakeview Elementary, and Vance Elementary on either March 2nd or March 9th.  We also have a group of students participating in Read Across America Day!  All of this excitement is thanks to Mrs. Roberts and all the background work she and her team have done.  In addition to arranging all of these exciting activities for our students, I have been in Mrs. Roberts' class and seen our 8th graders reading Night by Elie Wiesel and have been impressed by how she is helping our students connect with a very challenging text and story.  Great things are happening here at Brookwood Middle School where literacy matters!
