Welcome to Englewood Elementary. I am Mrs. Dawne Gibson, your school counselor. I am thrilled and delighted to be a part of a team of outstanding teachers, staff members, students, parents, and community leaders.
I earned my bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, and Special Education (MLBD). My Master's is in School Counseling K-12, and both degrees were received from the University of Alabama.
I have been a teacher/counselor in the Tuscaloosa County School System since 1996. I have taught fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. I completed my counseling internships working with students in kindergarten through eighth grades in various county schools, such as Lloyd Wood Middle School and Brewer-Porch Children‘s Center.
I am originally from Starkville, MS, but I have lived in Tuscaloosa for the majority of my life. Therefore, I consider Tuscaloosa my hometown (ROLL TIDE!). I have been married to Tommy Gibson since 1993. We have one son, Hunter, who was a graduate of Hillcrest High School in 2017 and he received his Associate's Degree from Shelton State Community College in December of 2018. My family is very important to me, and we enjoy playing games, remodeling projects, and spending time together. Children are at the center of my life, and I am excited about my role as a counselor where I can serve them more effectively.
You may be asking yourself what exactly does a counselor do each day,(see the presentations section for the slideshow Roles of a Counselor). I will be addressing multiple issues including: self-awareness, study skills, test-taking strategies, character education, drug and safety awareness, conflict resolution, and many other topics. I will meet with each class every other week, as well as conduct small groups and individual counseling sessions daily. Feel free to contact me if a problem arises or if you or your child is in need of my services. I am excited to be your counselor at Englewood Elementary School, and I am looking forward to a wonderful school year.
